ANTIVIR varnish – consumer safe packaging

22 March 2021

When we talk about preventing the spread of SARS-CoV-2 (causing COVID-19), we cannot confine ourselves only to talking about masks or washing hands. The coronavirus also remains on surfaces, but it is not possible to disinfect each product, for example in a hypermarket. In addition, the effectiveness of such disinfection is short. Akomex Group packaging with ANTIVIR varnish having antiviral and antibacterial properties is the response to this problem.

Of course, SARS-CoV-2 is largely droplet-transmitted, but research has shown that it remains for a relatively long time on different types of usable surface areas. It is present up to two days on wood, up to four days on paper, and up to seven days on plastic. The way to deal with this is, of course, disinfectants. However, if they are not used in accordance with safety procedures, they may leave harmful residues on surfaces which come in contact with, for example, food. In addition, as we mentioned earlier, disinfectants do not provide protection for a long time.

Therefore, Akomex Group has introduced to its offer a series of ANTIVIR varnishes which contain special additives with antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral properties.

How does it work?

ANTIVIR varnish contains substances that form a bioactive layer. It protects the surface against the development of pathogenic micro-organisms and prevents the transmission of bacteria and viruses from printed substrates. In this way, it improves safety of use and protects against transmission by consumer contact with the surface. Fighting the spread of coronavirus is, of course, the first association in the current situation, and it is completely understandable. Yet, ANTIVIR varnish also kills staphylococcus aureus or E. coli.

The antibacterial properties of the varnish are activated by light and air access – explains Marcin Szumigaj, Business Implementation Manager in Akomex Group. – The varnish becomes fully effective 24 hours after application, which is still in our production plant. Its duration is up to one year – adds Szumigaj.

Efficiency confirmed by research

ANTIVIR varnish kills up to 99.96% of staphylococcus aureus and up to 99.97% of E. coli bacteria, as well as 99.92% of SARS-Cov-2 (commonly known as coronavirus). Its effectiveness has been confirmed by tests in an independent microbiological laboratory and they have been carried out on the basis of ISO 20743:2013 (the standard for antimicrobial properties of porous materials) and ISO 21702:2019 (the standard for antiviral properties on plastics and other non-porous surfaces). As can be seen, antimicrobial and antiviral properties in this case are not only an advertising slogan, and the efficiency of ANTIVIR is supported by hard data.

Not only the food sector

And what packaging is ANTIVIR suitable for? The varnish is intended for printing easily absorbable surfaces that are in indirect contact with food. However, its properties can be applied not only in food packaging, but also in toy packaging and packaging for pharmaceutical, cosmetic or hygienic products.

Increased hygiene standards will remain with us for longer and consumer safety should be a priority for manufacturers. It is therefore worth appreciating this contribution of the printing industry to the fight against SARS-CoV-2 spread and applying such solutions as broadly as possible.
